Down where the dormouse gently sleeps,

Beneath decaying garden mould,

The ivy on the rowan creeps

As cool september turns to gold.

Bare is the earth and sharp of scent

For half the beauty of the day,

As birds eat berries with content

While summer goes her gladsome way.

And while the rose shakes off her gown

Of lipstick pink and ivory,

My poppies all a tremble frown

As spiders spin in shrubbery.

Yet as the afternoon grows dim,

Clouds turn from grey to paper-white,

While sycamores groan limb by limb,

And beetles scuttle, taking fright.

The wind's loud blowing round the house,

While storm flies at my window pry,

But all is quiet as a mouse,

Inside where all is warm and dry.

The twilight hour is still and sweet

And like the cats I’m snug as they,

Denying winters mournful beat,

With thoughts of summer castaway.
